What Cove Base Actually Does
A standard floor meets the wall at a 90-degree angle. In a commercial environment, that corner is a code violation waiting to happen. Bacteria, grease, water, and food debris all collect at the seam, and no amount of mopping reaches all the way into a sharp corner.
Cove base eliminates the corner. Instead of a sharp transition, the floor curves up the wall in a continuous 4-inch radius and your flake or grind and clear coating runs across the floor and right up the cove. There is no seam, no joint, and no place for contamination to hide.
This is the finishing detail that separates a sealed commercial floor from a fully cleanable commercial floor. Health departments across Kentucky and Indiana require or strongly recommend it in commercial kitchens, food processing plants, healthcare facilities, and pharmaceutical environments.
A Commercial and Industrial Upgrade, Not a Residential One
We get this question often: “Can I add cove base to my garage or basement?” The honest answer is that you can, but you almost certainly should not. Cove base is engineered to solve a hygiene and water-management problem that exists in commercial kitchens, food-service environments, and industrial spaces. In a residential garage or basement, it is over-engineering for a problem you do not have.
If you are running a commercial kitchen, a restaurant, a food processing facility, a healthcare environment, or any space subject to health-code inspection, cove base belongs in the spec. If you are coating a residential garage or patio, our flake floor system on its own is the right install.
Where Sullivan’s Cove Base Belongs
Commercial Kitchens
Health-code-grade hygiene at the floor-to-wall transition. Required or strongly recommended in most jurisdictions.
Restaurants & Food Service
A fully cleanable surface from floor to wall. No corners for grease, debris, or bacteria to collect in.
Food Processing & Manufacturing
Continuous, washable surfaces that hold up to daily wash-downs and high-pressure cleaning.
Healthcare & Lab Environments
Hospital-grade cleanability where contamination control is non-negotiable.
Pharmaceutical & Cleanroom Spaces
Seamless transitions that meet the standards required by regulated environments.
Industrial Restrooms & Wash Bays
Water has nowhere to wick up the wall and nowhere to collect at the corner.
The Commercial Pairing
Cove Base + Flake Floors and Grind and Clear
Sullivan’s cove base is engineered to work with two of our three systems: flake floors and grind and clear. The same polyaspartic chemistry that protects the floor runs continuously up the cove, sealing the floor-to-wall transition under one unbroken coating. We do not install cove base with our polishing system, because polished concrete does not have a coating layer to extend up the wall.
Cove Base + Flake Floors
The most popular commercial pairing. Decorative flake blend with cove base running up the wall, sealed under one polyaspartic top coat. Common in commercial showrooms, retail back-of-house, and restaurant kitchens.
Cove Base + Grind and Clear
The cleaner industrial pairing. Diamond-ground concrete with cove base running up the wall, sealed under a polyaspartic clear coat. Common in food processing, warehouses, and lab environments.

FAQs
Cove Base Questions, Answered
What is cove base?
Cove base is the seamless 4-inch curve that runs from your floor up the wall, eliminating the corner where the two meet. The result is a continuous, unbroken surface from floor to wall with no seam, no joint, and no place for water, debris, or bacteria to collect.
Why is cove base required in commercial kitchens?
Most health codes require or strongly recommend a coved transition between the floor and the wall in food-service environments. We recommend confirming the exact code requirements for your jurisdiction with your local health inspector before install.
Can cove base be installed in a residential garage or basement?
Technically yes, but we do not recommend it. Cove base is engineered to solve a hygiene and water-management problem that exists in commercial environments, not residential ones.
What systems does Sullivan’s cove base work with?
Cove base pairs with our flake floor and grind and clear systems. We do not install cove base with our polishing system, because polished concrete does not have a coating layer to extend up the wall.
Does cove base get installed at the same time as my floor?
Yes. Cove base is installed before the floor coating on the same install day. The flake or grind and clear coating then runs continuously over both the floor and the cove, sealing them under one unbroken finish.
How tall is the cove?
Standard Sullivan’s cove base is a 4-inch radius from the floor up the wall.
Is cove base covered under the same warranty as the floor?
Yes. Cove base is covered under the 5-year commercial warranty that backs the floor system it is installed with.
How much does cove base add to the cost of my install?
Cost depends on the linear footage of wall in the space. We give you the exact add-on cost during your free on-site consultation when we measure the facility.
